IPD Tutorial
The Incidence & Prevalence Database (IPD) is a rapid "click and retrieve" tool providing epidemiological data from hundreds of original sources.
Begin searching the IPD by selecting the IPD New Search link from any page on our website. On the search screen you will find three search
options. Please read below for a detailed description of each.
Once you have explored the searching options please read about the
report types available in the IPD.

Intent and Scope
- Intent: The IPD provides a comprehensive "first-look" at a particular disease or procedure. It is a time-saving tool that provides a complete epidemiological overview of your topic.
- Timeliness: The website is updated every two weeks, and each update includes over 200 new Article Reviews. Government statistics are updated annually depending on availability.
- Inclusions and Exclusions: The IPD covers epidemiology and related areas. It does not include specific medical therapies or drugs in development. However, we have included some "hot topic" treatment data (e.g., alternative therapies, insulin therapy, antiemetics, etc.). You can review our treatment-related keywords by typing "therapy," "treat" or “medication” into the keyword search window.
Search Options
- The IPD uses a controlled vocabulary of over 10,000 keywords to help you better target your search needs. These keywords are based on the text of the original source and are designed to help you find the disease, procedure, country, symptom or health issue that you are interested in.
- The best way to start a search is to select the Keyword Search option. When you type a word or partial word in the criteria box, a dropdown list of all keywords containing your search term will appear onscreen. Select your keyword from the list and either click "Search the IPD" or repeat this process to add a second or third keyword to your search.
- Using truncated terms can help you find the exact keyword you are looking for. For example, using "diab" will give you our complete list of diabetes keywords, including "diabetic neuropathy" as well as “gestational diabetes”.
- Use an ICD Code Search when you are interested in a specific disease or procedure code. You can browse our ICD
Index to find a specific code or run a keyword search to find codes associated to a specific diagnosis or procedure.
- Always include the dot (.) in the ICD code for the search to run properly.
- Using an asterisk (*) in your search will retrieve your main code as well as its subcodes (for example, searching on "36.*" will retrieve entries for 36., 36.0, 36.05, etc.).
- • We currently use ICD-9 codes, but ICD-9 to ICD-10 and
ICD-10 to ICD-9 conversion tools are available from our website.
Use the Advanced Search to enter more complex criteria, including any or all of the following:
- keywords (up to 3 terms; Boolean operators supported)
- text (up to 3 terms; Boolean operators supported)
- countries and regions (search multiple terms simultaneously)
- publication criteria (date, title, author)
Report Types and Samples
- Article Reviews -- Article Reviews contain epidemiology data (incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality) and related topics (cost, risk factors, prognosis). Certain non-disease topics like treatment compliance and managed care, as well as more general topics like chronic pain, are also covered.
Our analysts review hundreds of trade journals, medical journals, audits, online databases, registries, and market investment reports each month and summarize the data into Article Reviews with descriptive headings. Condensed notes about the study design are also included to provide vital contextual information. Full source citations are provided for each entry.
Overview Reports
- IPD Summaries -- Worldwide and regional incidence and prevalence data (in absolute numbers and as rates, where available) are provided in HTML or Excel format for the top disease codes. Also included are summaries of major Subgroups and Trends and a list of related ICD codes. Full source citations are provided for each entry.
- Global Incidence & Prevalence Report with Map -- This section provides top-line U.S. and international incidence and prevalence data compiled from the Article Reviews. Each paragraph corresponds to a specific hyperlinked Article Review in the same ICD code and can be accessed via a hyperlinked table of contents or via the Global Map Browse by clicking on a country of interest. Source citations appear at the end of each paragraph.
