IPD Tutorial

Welcome to the Timely Data Resources tutorial for the Incidence and Prevalence Database (IPD). The IPD is a rapid "click and retrieve" database providing epidemiological data you need from hundreds of sources.

Begin searching the IPD by selecting the IPD icon on the left-hand bar anywhere on our website. On the IPD page you find three searching options. Please read below about these different ways of searching the IPD.

Once you have explored the searching options please read about the report types available in the IPD.

If you have any questions please call us at (831) 462-2510. Your subscription includes full searching and training support from our analysts.

Search Options

KEYWORD SEARCH

  • The best way to start a search is to select the keyword search option. These keywords have been designed by TDR to help you find the disease, procedure, symptom or health issue that you are interested in.

  • Type a keyword in the criteria box and click "Search for Keywords". A list of all keywords containing your search term will appear onscreen. Select your keyword from the list and click "Search the IPD".

  • Using truncated keywords can help you find the exact keyword you are looking for. For example, using "diab" when looking for data on diabetes will give you our complete list of diabetes keywords, from "diabetic neuropathy" to "type 2 diabetes mellitus without mention of complications".

ICD CODE SEARCH

  • Use an ICD code search when you are interested in a specific disease or procedure code. You can browse our ICD Index to find a specific code or run a keyword search to find codes associated to a specific diagnosis or procedure.

  • You must always include the dot (.) in the ICD code for the search to run properly.

  • Using an asterisk (*) in your search will retrieve your main code as well as its subcodes (for example, searching on "36.*" will retrieve entries for 36., 36.0, 36.05, etc.).

  • We currently use ICD-9 codes, but ICD-9 to ICD-10 and ICD-10 to ICD-9 conversion tools are available from our website.

TEXT SEARCH

  • Use a text search if there is no predefined keyword for your topic of interest.

  • Using only one word per criteria box will speed up your text search. You can also use truncated words.

Report Types and Samples

  • INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE SUMMARIES -- Worldwide and regional incidence and prevalence data (in absolute numbers and as rates, where available) are provided in an Excel format for the top disease codes. Also included are summaries of major trends and a list of related ICD codes.

  • GLOBAL INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE -- This section provides top-line U.S. and international incidence and prevalence data compiled from the Article Reviews; each paragraph corresponds to a specific Article Review in the same ICD code. Source citations appear at the end of each paragraph.

  • U.S. TREND DATA -- This section shows trends over time in different service categories (hospital inpatients/outpatients, the emergency room, and physicians' offices, where applicable). These data come from the National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS), the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), and the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS).

  • REMARKS/SUGGESTED READING -- Our Remarks section is a tutorial for each ICD code, providing cross-references, definitions, diagnostic challenges, and disease classifications. The Suggested Reading section includes a list of quality sources we've found that don't necessarily fit the scope of the IPD. Topics include treatment, outcome, cost effectiveness, quality of life, diagnostic issues, etiology, genetics, histopathology, and screening/testing (where applicable).

  • ARTICLE REVIEWS -- Article Reviews contain epidemiology data (incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality) and related topics (e.g., cost, risk factors, prognosis). Non-disease topics like treatment compliance and managed care, as well as more general topics like chronic pain, are also covered. Our analysts review hundreds of trade journals, medical journals, audits, on-line databases, registries, and market investment reports each month and summarize the data into the Article Reviews. Full source citations are provided for each review.

  • TREATMENT REPORTS -- Treatment Reports report best treatment practices for major conditions. The reports come directly from the newest available edition of Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment (updated annually).

Special Data Requests

Your subscription includes access to our analysts for data clarification or further search requests. If you are having trouble finding the data you need, please contact our office.

Intent and Scope

  • INTENT: The IPD provides a comprehensive "first-look" at a particular disease or procedure. It is a time-saving tool that provides a complete epidemiological overview of your topic.

  • TIMELINESS: The website is updated every four weeks, and each update includes over 150 new Article Reviews. Government statistics are updated annually.

  • INCLUSIONS AND EXCLUSIONS: The IPD covers epidemiology and related areas. It does not include specific medical therapies or drugs in development. However, we have included some "hot topic" treatment data (e.g., alternative therapies, insulin therapy, antiemetics, etc.). You can review our treatment-related keywords by running a "Search for Keywords" search on the terms "therapy" or "treatment".
