      PREVALENCE AND MORTALITY: In the U.S., 14 to 15 million people have asthma, and more than 5000 deaths due to asthma are reported annually. Although the onset of asthma may occur at any age, more than 80% of cases develop in people younger than 45 years of age. About 70% of people with asthma have mild disease, whereas 20% and 10% have moderate and severe disease, respectively.
      SEVERITY: The assessment of the severity of persistent asthma for mild, moderate, and severe cases (respectively) is as follows. Symptom frequency: 1 to 2 times per week; 3 to 5 times per week; daily. Nocturnal symptoms: less than 2 times per week; 2 to 5 times per week; almost nightly. Activity limitation: brief (less than half hour); mild to moderate; substantial. School or work: rarely affected; performance affected; poor performance. Corticosteroid bursts per year: 0 or 1; 2 or 3; more than 3. Peak expiratory flow rate or forced expiratory volume in 1 second: 80% of best or greater: 60% to 80% of best; less than 60% of best. Peak flow meter daily variability: 20% to 30%; more than 30%; more than 30%. Drug used to relieve symptoms: less than daily; 2 to 3 times per day; more than 3 times per day. Recommended follow-up: 6 to 12 months; 4 to 6 months; 2 to 4 months.
