      PREVALENCE TRENDS: The crude prevalence of hypertension (defined as systolic pressure of at least 140 mm Hg or diastolic pressure of at least 90 mm Hg or taking antihypertensive medication) among persons age 20 and older in the U.S. in 1988-1994 versus 1999-2002 was reported as follows: both sexes, 24.1% vs 30.2%; male, 23.8% vs 27.6%; female, 24.4% vs 32.7%; white male (not Hispanic or Latino), 24.3% vs 28.3%; white female (not Hispanic or Latino), 24.6% vs 32.9%; black or African American male (not Hispanic or Latino), 31.1% vs 35.9%; black or African American female (not Hispanic or Latino), 32.5% vs 42.1%; Mexican male, 16.4% vs 16.5%; Mexican female, 15.9% vs 18.8%; poor (below the poverty threshold), 25.7% vs 30.3%; near poor (100% to less than 200% of the poverty threshold), 26.7% vs 34.8%; nonpoor (200% or greater than the poverty threshold), 22.2% vs 28.2%.
      The age-specific prevalence of hypertension among persons age 20 and older in the U.S. in 1988-1994 versus 1999-2002 was reported as follows (males and females, respectively): ages 20 to 34 years, 7.1% vs 8.1% (unreliable estimate), 2.9% vs 2.7% (unreliable estimate); ages 35 to 44 years, 17.1% vs 17.1%, 11.2% vs 15.1%; ages 45 to 54 years, 29.2% vs 31.0%, 23.9% vs 31.8%; ages 55 to 64 years, 40.6% vs 45.0%, 42.6% vs 53.9%; ages 65 to 74 years, 54.4% vs 59.6%, 56.2% vs 72.7%; ages 75 years and over, 60.4% vs 69.0%, 73.6% vs 83.1%.
